12 Louw Street, in the heart of Stellenbosch, used to be an old derelict house, with an overgrown garden and very little going for it... That was until Matilda de Bod noticed the potential of this old house in April of 2003 and decided to renovate it into the beautiful building standing at the same address today.

Batavia Boutique Hotel is the brainchild of Fire and Glory Investments (pty) LTD - a company established by Matilda de Bod, Windred van Reenen and Joan Sonn. Perhaps "Fire and Glory" is a fitting description for what happened in the 8 months of starting and completing this purpose built Boutique Hotel.
