De Doornkraal Historic Country House is located in the heart of Riversdale. Its farmland stretches to the Vette River bordering the town. The historic De Doornkraal Homestead is one of the original structures of the farm Doornkraal proclaimed in 1746. The homestead was built in the latter part of the 18th Century and is named after famous author and artist Johannes Meintjes
who was born there.
The original owner of the farm Doornkraal was Hermanus Egbertus Steyn, a direct descendant of master builder Douw Gerbrandt Steyn who in 1668 arrived from Leeuwarden in Friesland to build the Goedehoop Castle, today one of Cape Town's main tourist attractions. In 1838 the Steyn family sold
a portion of the farm Doornkraal to establish the village of Riversdale. The current owner, professor Pieter Gerbrandt Steyn is a direct descendant of the Doornkraal Steyns.
